The church of Sant'Antonio in the year 1200 existed under the name of Santa Maria Annunziata, in about 1225, S.Francesco of Assisi resided in Pescina and built the convent next to it which was expanded and later devoted to the saint.
Subsequently it was dedicated to St. Anthony of Padua.

The elaborate limestone sheet was made towards the end of 1300, the upper part was added later.
In 1393 the Count of Celano and Baron of Pescina, Ruggiero, made a remarkable contribution to the expansion of the church and of the neighboring convent of the Minor Conventuals.
On the gorgeous portal of Roman-Gothic style with sculpted archives, Count Ruggiero made the coat of arms of Celano to be carved in stone.

The upper part of the façade is of a late Renaissance style. The work was carried out under the direction of architect Giovanni Canale, a pupil of Bernini whom he called Pescina (Pescina 1610-Roma 1676) in the years 1640-1648; also nicknamed Artusi.
